We are a working cattle operation in Central Texas, run by Jonathan Jefferson. Not every animal listed here stands on his own place — some lots come from other farms he works with — but every one of those farms is in Texas, every lot has been looked over by us, and its age, weight, health work, papers and price are stated on the listing. If you want to see an animal before you buy, we will arrange it.

Who we are
Twenty-five years in one place
Jonathan Jefferson has been breeding cattle at Rochelle, in McCulloch County, for more than twenty-five years — Hereford, Miniature Hereford, Black Angus and Red Angus. His own herd is the core of what you see on this site, but it is not all of it. To keep the listings full through the year, Jonathan also sells cattle standing on a handful of other Texas farms run by breeders he has known and traded with for years. Wherever a lot lives, it has been looked over by us and is described on its listing exactly as we found it.
Twenty-five years in one place teaches you things a sale catalogue cannot. You learn which cows hold condition through a dry Central Texas summer and which ones come apart in August. You learn which bulls throw calves that arrive without help at two in the morning, and which lines stay quiet in a chute generation after generation.
That is what we breed for, and it is why we can tell a buyer honestly when an animal is not right for them.

We want this to be plain before you buy: not all the livestock listed on this website are on Jonathan's personal farm. Every farm we sell from is in Texas, and the same standard applies to every lot.

One standard, every lot
Whichever farm an animal is on, we have looked it over, its papers and health work are stated on the listing, and we will tell you where it is standing and arrange a visit.
What we select for
Four things, in this order
Keeping both breeds under one gate is deliberate. It means we can put a Black Baldy together on request, we can tell a buyer honestly which breed suits their country instead of selling the only one we have, and we see the two side by side through the same droughts and the same winters.
Disposition
A quiet cow is safer to work and passes it to her calves. We cull for temperament and always have.
Fertility and longevity
A cow that breeds back every year for a decade earns her keep. One that misses does not.
Calving ease
Especially in the bulls we sell. Nobody wants to pull a calf at two in the morning because a bull looked good on paper.
Doing ability on Texas grass
Cattle that hold condition here will hold it most places. Central Texas is an honest test.
Our way of selling
Why we publish our prices
Almost every cattle site in the country says "call for price". The reasoning is that a conversation lets a seller read the buyer, and price accordingly. We think it mostly wastes everyone's afternoon and tells a first-time buyer that they are about to be sized up.
So every animal on this site carries its price, and what drives those figures is set out on the cattle prices page. You can decide whether a cow is worth the difference without ringing anyone.
Disclosure
What a sale ring cannot tell you
The ring gives you a few seconds and a lot number. Buying from the people who raised the animal — or who know the Texas breeder who did — gives you the rest of it: how her dam performed, whether she calved unassisted, what she is like in a chute, and the honest reason she is for sale.
We also tell buyers when an animal is wrong for them. Someone with eight acres and no working facilities does not need a full-size bull, however much they like the look of him, and we would rather lose that sale than have the phone ring in six months.

Where we are
The place is at Rochelle, in McCulloch County, Central Texas — about twenty minutes from Brady, and within a few hours of Austin, San Antonio, Abilene and San Angelo.
Buyers drive out to look at cattle regularly and we would rather you did. Get in touch ahead so someone is at the house and the cattle are penned where you can see them properly. If the lot you are interested in is on one of the other Texas farms we sell from, we will tell you where it is and arrange the visit there.
Verification
Registration and papers
Our registered cattle are recorded with the associations that maintain the herd books and EPD databases for each line. Papers and transfers go through them, and you are welcome to verify any animal's registration with the association directly before you buy:

Not every animal we sell is registered, and the listing always says which. Good commercial cattle without papers do the same job in a commercial herd at a lower price — we will tell you when papers are worth paying for and when they are not.
