Most cattle sites make you send an enquiry to find out what an animal costs. We publish ours on every listing. This page explains what sits behind those numbers.

The honest answer to how much does a Black Angus cow cost is that it depends on four things — age, registration, whether she is bred, and her EPDs — and the spread between the cheapest and dearest animal in the same category can be three-fold. A commercial open heifer and a registered bred cow with documented calving-ease numbers are not the same purchase, and no single figure covers both.
So rather than quote one number that would be wrong for most animals, every head on this site carries its own price on its own listing. What this page does is explain what sits behind those figures, so you can tell why one cow is dearer than the one standing next to her.

What each breed costs, and why
Angus cattle prices
Black Angus cow price is the figure buyers ask us for most, and the spread is wide: a weaned commercial calf and a registered bred female with documented calving-ease numbers are not the same purchase. The Black Angus cow cost at the top of any range buys verifiable genetics; at the bottom it buys sound commercial breeding stock without papers.

Hereford cattle prices
Hereford cow price tracks close to Angus for comparable animals, with two differences worth knowing. Polled Herefords generally carry a small premium over horned in commercial trade because there is no dehorning to do. Black Herefords sit above straight Herefords, because the hide colour opens up buyer programs that specify black.

Red Angus prices
Red Angus generally prices alongside Black Angus for equivalent animals. Where it moves is southern demand: through a Texas summer, buyers pay for a hide that reflects heat, and bred Red Angus females tighten up accordingly in the back half of the year.

Miniature Hereford prices
Minis do not follow the pound-based logic of full-size cattle. You are not buying weight, you are buying a small, quiet animal that suits acreage a standard cow would ruin — so a mini heifer often costs more than a full-size commercial heifer twice her weight. Halter-broke animals carry a premium because someone has already put the hours in.

What actually moves the price
Registration and pedigree
Papers from the American Hereford, American Angus or Red Angus associations typically add a meaningful premium over an identical commercial animal — you are buying verifiable ancestry and the ability to register the calves.
Bred or open
A confirmed-bred female carries the value of the calf inside her plus the breeding cost already spent. The further along she is, the more of that is banked.
EPDs
Calving ease, weaning weight and milk figures move a bull's price more than anything else on the sheet. Documented calving-ease numbers are cheap insurance against a bad night in a February pasture.
Age
A cow's value peaks through her productive middle years and tapers as she approaches the end of her breeding life. The cheapest cow on any list is usually the oldest for a reason.
Disposition
We price quiet cattle higher and make no apology for it. A wild cow is dangerous to work, hard to load, and passes temperament to her calves.
Season
Bred female prices firm up ahead of spring calving and soften after. Buying against the season saves money if your calving window allows it.
Volume
Buying a group changes the price per head — three or more and we quote the lot rather than the animal. It cuts your freight substantially too.
Where to buy
Buying direct versus the sale barn
A sale barn is fast and it is anonymous. You bid on what walks through the ring, you find out about temperament after you get home, and you rarely know why the previous owner sold.
Buying direct costs more per head and gives you the things the ring cannot: the animal's history, her dam's record, honest disclosure of anything that would show up later, and someone who answers the phone in six months.
For a commercial operator filling a truck, the barn often wins on price. For anyone building a herd they intend to keep, the difference is usually recovered in the first calf crop.

Are your prices negotiable?
On single animals, the listed price is the price — that is the point of publishing it on the listing. On groups of three head or more we quote the lot, and it comes out below the sum of the individual prices.
Is freight included in the price?
No. Every price on this site is for the animal standing at our place in Rochelle. Freight is calculated at checkout from your delivery address — see shipping and delivery.
Why is a mini Hereford heifer more than a full-size commercial heifer?
Because you are not buying pounds. Minis are priced on scarcity, disposition and suitability for small acreage. A buyer with ten acres cannot run a standard cow herd, and the market prices that accordingly.
Do you offer payment plans?
