Preg checked, and calving starts in weeks

The breeding status is the whole story here. A cow sold as exposed is a coin toss dressed up as a sale; preg checked cattle have been through the chute and confirmed. They ran 90 days with Hereford bulls, the calving window opens at the end of September and closes in December, and they are carrying enough condition to calve and milk without falling apart.

Because the cows are papered and the sires are Hereford, the calves on the ground this fall are straightbred and eligible for registration. That is a different proposition from a crossbred calf: you can paper the heifers, keep them as replacements and build a herd rather than sell everything at the barn.

Registration and papers

All four carry American Hereford Association papers that transfer at purchase. Homegrown means the records behind them are complete rather than reconstructed after a trip through a sale ring — ask for registration numbers by tag and we will send pedigrees, sires and dams before you commit. Three of the four are polled and one is horned.

Health and vaccination record

  • OCV: Yes — calfhood vaccinated for brucellosis, which keeps interstate movement options open. Worth more than most buyers realize on breeding females
  • Vaccinations, spring 2026: Ultrabac 7 clostridial, CattleMaster Gold viral and reproductive, Valcor wormer
  • Breeding status: Preg checked — confirmed bred, not exposed
  • Development: Pasture, no grain
  • Papers: AHA registration transfers with each cow
  • Before shipping: Health certificate, brand inspection and state entry permits arranged

Fall calving vs spring calving — what you are buying into

These calve in the fall, which is a deliberate program rather than an accident of timing, and it suits some outfits better than others. Fall calves hit the ground in cooler weather with less mud and fewer scours, and they wean into a spring market that is often short of cattle. Breeding back happens in winter, when heat stress is not working against conception the way it does on a July-bred spring herd.

The cost is feed. A fall-calving cow is milking through the winter, which is the most expensive time of year to keep her, so she needs decent hay or standing forage behind her. If you are already running a spring herd, adding these gives you two calf crops and two marketing dates instead of one, which smooths cash flow across the year.

Cow weight, frame and the country they suit

At 1,400 pounds these are big females. Hereford cow weight of that order means real milk and real weaning weights, but it also means real feed — a 1,400-pound cow eats roughly a third more than a 1,000-pound cow and will not hold condition on thin, rough country. On good grass she pays for the extra intake at weaning. On marginal ground she does not.

Frame is moderate to large and they are in fleshy condition, which is where a cow ought to be three weeks out from calving. Age spread of three to six years puts every one of them in her productive prime with years of work left.

Who should buy these

A producer who wants calves this year, not next. Anyone shopping for a Hereford cow for sale usually accepts a wait; a confirmed bred cow calving in September collapses that timeline to almost nothing. Buyers building a registered herd get papered females and registrable calves in one purchase.

They also suit an operation moving into fall calving, or anyone looking at fall calving cows for sale to run alongside an existing spring herd. Because any number sells, one cow is as welcome an order as all four.

Bred Hereford cows for sale: price, delivery and how to buy

Contact us for pricing. Any number sells, and taking more than one generally improves the number per head. A deposit holds a cow or the group while hauling and paperwork are arranged.

One thing to settle early: hauling. These calve from the end of September, so a cow shipped in the last few weeks of gestation should travel short and travel soon, or you should plan to buy her and haul after she calves. Long hauls on a heavy-bred cow are hard on her and hard on the calf. Tell us your address and we will tell you honestly which side of calving to move her on. We ship nationwide with insured livestock haulers, freight quoted by the mile and the load, with health certificates and permits handled before loading.

Frequently asked questions

Are they actually confirmed bred? Yes. Preg checked, not exposed. They were with Hereford bulls 90 days and are due from the end of September through December.

Can the calves be registered? Yes. The cows carry AHA papers and were bred to Hereford bulls, so the calves are straightbred and eligible.

What does OCV mean and why does it matter? It means calfhood vaccinated against brucellosis, sometimes called Bangs. Several states require it on breeding females coming in from out of state, and preg checked cattle without it can be turned back at a state line. These have it.

Is 1,400 pounds too big for a small place? Hereford cow weight is only a problem relative to your grass. Big cows wean big calves when there is feed in front of them. On short country a moderate 1,000 to 1,100 pound cow will cost you less to keep — tell us what you are running them on and we will say so straight.
